About This Test

Oxidation Hair Dyes – Type-2, as per IS 8481:2020, are semi-permanent or tone-on-tone hair coloring products in liquid, gel, or cream form, intended to provide color enhancement, blending of grey hair, or subtle color changes. These formulations involve pre-formed dye molecules or milder oxidation dyes that require lower concentrations of hydrogen peroxide compared to Type-3 (permanent dyes).

These dyes typically contain:

  • Low levels of primary intermediates and couplers

  • Emollient-rich cream or gel base for easy application

  • Fragrance, stabilizers, emulsifiers, and conditioners for improved hair feel and scalp comfort

The product is designed to:

  • Deliver natural-looking color results with lower chemical intensity

  • Be gentler on the hair and scalp

  • Fade gradually over several washes

  • Be applied with or without a mild oxidizing agent

Why It Matters

Purpose of Testing

Verify the identity and permissible limits of dye intermediates and couplers

Test pH value to ensure scalp compatibility and product stability

Check for heavy metals like lead, arsenic, and mercury within BIS-specified limits

Evaluate microbiological safety to ensure the product is free from harmful bacteria or fungi

Confirm product stability (resistance to separation, degradation, or color change over time)

Ensure no presence of banned ingredients or unapproved coloring agents

Verify mandatory labeling requirements, including usage instructions, patch test advisory, and safety warnings

Assess packaging integrity and compliance with BIS cosmetic standards
